David age 24, William age 20, and Rebecca age 19 were an independent household in Sullivan County, Tennessee. David and William were farmers.
In 1860 William and Sarah were living in Sullivan County with their children at Yoakely's Store post office. Rebecca and Henry Mauck were in Sullivan County at Union Depot.
Rebecca's husband, Henry, died of wounds he suffered in the Civil War. William served in Company G of the 60th Tennessee Infantry.
Alexander died on March 23, 1879 and Rachel on January 11, 1878.

Sullivan County is in far northeast corner of Tennessee between North Carolina and Virginia and was originally part of those states. It was formed in 1779 when it was divided from Washington County.
East Tennessee is part of Appalachia. At the end of the French and Indian War, colonists began drifting into the area. In 1769, they first settled along the Watauga River. During the Revolution, the Overmountain Men defeated British loyalists at the Battle of Kings Mountain. The State of Franklin was formed in the 1780s, but never admitted to the Union.
During the Civil war many citizens of East Tennessee opposed secession, but the area was under Confederate control from 1861 to 1863. Some citizens engaged in guerrilla warfare against state authorities and joined the Union army, while others were loyal to the confederacy. It was a heartbreaking case of neighbor against neighbor and brother against brother.

I was exposed at the battle of Vicksburg – came near freezing at night picket duty. Was not wounded. Lost my health in the war from exposure and hardships…also given me heart disease. Was sent to hospital, do not remember surgeon.
Q: How did you get out of the Army?
A: After the surrender, we just went home.
Took the oath of allegiance. The following fall we were ordered to Blountsville [Tenn] to take the oath so I went and took it.
Married, wife 70 and daughter 33 at home. Have 3 sons, 1 daughter married;
total 2 girls 3 boys. Children cannot support applicant.
Occupation farming, own household and kitchen furniture valued at $50.00. My son & I farmed he is now gone does not help me any.
